Whether your SSL certificate requires organizational validation depends on the type of SSL you choose. Each type offers a different level of validation, trust, and verification.
Alpha SSL and Domain SSL Certificates
For Alpha SSL and Domain SSL certificates, organizational validation is not required. These are known as Domain-Validated certificates. They only verify that you own or control the domain name, rather than verifying your business or organization.
Because the validation process is automated, these certificates can be issued within about 5 minutes.
These are ideal for:
Personal or portfolio websites
Blogs or informational pages
Small business sites that don’t process sensitive data
Even though they don’t include organizational vetting, they still offer strong encryption to protect data shared between your website and its visitors.
Organization SSL Certificates
Organization-Validated SSLs go a step further. In addition to verifying domain ownership, the issuing authority confirms your business identity, including your organization’s legal name, address, and registration details.
This added verification helps visitors trust that your site belongs to a real, legitimate business, making OV certificates a good fit for company websites, nonprofits, or professional services.
Because of this verification process, OV SSLs typically take 2–5 business days to issue.
Extended SSL Certificates
Extended Validation SSLs offer the highest level of trust and verification. These certificates require a thorough review of your organization’s legal, physical, and operational existence, along with proof that you are authorized to request the certificate on behalf of the company.
EV SSLs display enhanced trust indicators in browsers, such as showing your company name in the certificate details, which helps assure visitors that they’re on a verified and secure site.
These SSL's also take 2–5 business days to issue due to the in-depth verification process.
